Looking to take a short getaway?

Looking to take a short getaway? Jump in the car and head to North Stradbroke Island. It’s an easy day trip for all those in South East Queensland, but if you’re from the South, put this on your itinerary as part of your next Queensland Holiday, it won’t disappoint!
North Stradbroke is one of the world’s largest sand islands. It has pristine beaches and fishing villages, and the surrounding waters are scattered with shipwrecks. It’s also one of the world’s most ecologically important wetlands. From North Gorge look for whales, dolphins and manta rays too.

North Stradbroke’s unspoilt condition is due to the only 2000 to 3000 people who live full-time on the island, and make note, plastic bags are banned. Over the summer the population swells with visitors to the five main beaches on the island, which feature everything from sheltered, shallow water to excellent surf conditions.

This is a popular destination for off-road 4WD adventures. Many of the best beaches are accessible by vehicle, and since the island is entirely composed of sand, a 4WD is essential for off-roading. Several internal attractions, like its hinterland and lakes, are only accessible via 4WD.
There are so many activities to do on the island, so while it makes a great day trip, it also offers a brilliant weekend away for all ages and lifestyles. If you want to be at one with the land, there are basic campsites, or purely camping permits for you to set up camp where ever you wish to stop for the day. Perfect for the bloke who wants a simpler life: fishing rod and some tinnies. For those with slightly more lavish tastes, there are some beautiful resorts including the Pandanus Palms that offers Ocean View suites and villas.

But what can you do on the island? Try your hand at sand tobogganing for the young and the young at heart. The Sand dunes are HUGE, but they’re also seriously fun. There is also whale watching, dolphin feeding, snorkelling, fishing, bush walking, 4WDing and so much more – the island is a treasure trove for those in the know.

North Stradbroke is accessed by ferry from Cleveland on the mainland to Dunwich, the primary settlement on the island. There are two options: a water taxi if you’re only planning on walking around, or a car ferry, great if you’re planning a 4WD adventure along some beaches. Ferry services operate daily.
